Origin by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Origin is the fourth book in the Lux series by writer Jennifer L Armentrout. I haven’t read the previous books in the series. And I’ll admit the cover pulled me in. Pretty covers notwith standing I was pleasantly surprised.
Books in this particular genre (aliens) aren’t usually my cup of earl grey. However that aside I was impressed that even though I hadn’t read the previous copies in this series. I didn’t feel out of the loop, Origin can stand on its own. High marks for that.
The romance was my guilty pleasure cliche and sappy at times but still came across as attainable. Rang with enough truth that it wasn’t over the top. The plot though initially I thought I to myself “I got this. I know what’s going on” well . . . no. Writer Armentrout gives the reader the impression you can figure out what’s gong on if you can pull from that poll of knowledge of Alien movies you’ve watched on Netflix. That’s half right military set pretty standard and but the motivations, alliances, and secrets aren’t clear and only slowly reveal themselves through out the book. She had me guessing what the end game was until I finally gave and just enjoyed the book.
Origin takes places mostly in one location and without the dazzles of descriptive surroundings to distract the reader. The writing itself had to do all the heavy lifting. Meaning consistent pacing, compelling action, awesome characters. For the most part Origin is solid book with established characters, interesting plot but where it suffered was the moments where the dreaded lag or lack of inaction shone the most. Certain scenes or premises took too long to reach it conclusion.
The carrot and stick method-took too long to reveal. And when it was it wasn’t as grand for all the references made to it. Premises that took too long to reveal themselves run the risk of losing the readers attention and in my opinion Origin came dangerously. I have a very short attention span. So quick consistent and compelling goes a long way with me. However I did like Origin and would recommend for 14 and the is some violence and saucy language. I gave Origin a solid 4 out 5.
